Release day is the most rewarding moment at all our rescue and rehabilitation centres. Returning a turtle patient to the wild after a successful recovery from injury or disease is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Between 2017 and mid-2025, we released 149 successfully rehabilitated patients. Our release rate is around 60% – a significant achievement in wildlife conservation medicine.
Tagged & released turtle patients
Most of our patients are olive ridley turtles. Olive ridleys, unlike the commonly seen green and hawksbill turtles, spend most of their life in the open ocean. Therefore, we know surprisingly little about them!
ORPTrack, our satellite tagging programme, is a scientific research project that will help us gain better understanding of the feeding habits of olive ridley turtles. We deployed our first satellite tag on 18 April 2022.
Since then, we have tagged and released five more olive ridleys, the last one in July 2024.
