Sea turtles have existed on Earth for over 120 million years and there are currently seven species left in the world. These incredible animals grace the waters of all the world’s oceans except the Arctic.

Unfortunately, sea turtles face many threats to their survival. Some of the biggest threats to sea turtles include: entanglement in marine debris, illegal take, bycatch, and destruction of feeding and nesting habitats. Six out of seven species of sea turtles are threatened with extinction according to the IUCN Red List.

ORP has been working in Kenya since 2018. Our main objective here is to increase the knowledge and understanding of sea turtle distribution in the marine ecosystems and the major threats the sea turtles are exposed to. In addition, building local capacity, particularly within sea turtle research, conservation, monitoring and rehabilitation, is a key focus. Read more about our work in Kenya here.
