Dhon Kalo’s Story

Dhon Kalo, which means “sweet boy” in Dhivehi, was spotted floating for more than an hour near the restaurant at Heritance Aarah Resort by Shanif, a staff member. Concerned that something might be wrong, he reached out to our sea turtle biologist Abdulla “Swift” Hameed, who is based at JOALI BEING, for advice.

Swift promptly contacted the veterinary team for a health assessment. After an overnight at JOALI BEING, the resort organised a speedboat to transport Dhon Kalo to our Rescue Centre in Baa for further care and rehabilitation.

Following a comprehensive health assessment, the veterinary team determined that Dhon Kalo has severe colitis, which has lead to Chronic Debilitation Syndrome (CDS), a state of severe debilitation which can be caused by many different factors. CDS is treatable with intensive care, so we are hopeful we can help Dhon Kalo get back to her ocean home.

Despite our best efforts, we sadly lost Dhon Kalo today. By the time she arrived at the Rescue Centre, her condition was too far gone and she did not improve with treatment. After her passing, we conducted a postmortem examination and found that she suffered from a severe intestinal disease. We also discovered that she was a female.
