Sea Turtle Biologist & Guest Educator, Shaviyani Atoll
A resident of Kaafu Atoll, Malé, Thuva Ahmed’s journey into the marine world began with childhood afternoons spent watching Nat Geo Wild documentaries. But it was her grandfather’s deep connection to the ocean that truly inspired her to pursue a career in marine science. Driven by this passion, Thuva steadily built a foundation of both academic and hands-on experience in the field.
Thuva contributed to coral reef research through her work at the Maldives Marine Research Institute, all while juggling the demands of completing her Bachelor’s degree and earning her Divemaster certification. Her commitment to marine conservation also took her to Malaysia, where she completed an internship focused on sea turtle conservation.
Thuva recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Aquatic Resource Science and Management from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). She has also completed a one-year internship at Maldives Underwater Initiative (MUI), which helped her further develop her skills and gain valuable field experience in marine conservation within the Maldives.
Thuva joined ORP in April 2025 as the sea Turtle Biologist and Guest Educator for Shaviyani Atoll. In her role, she conducts Photo-ID research on the local turtle populations, nesting research on the island, and engages in guest education and community engagement.
She remains committed to learning, growing, and playing her part in protecting one of the ocean’s most vulnerable species.
