Dr. Kelen, Associate Veterinary Surgeon

Growing up in Brazil, Kelen had always felt a strong connection to the ocean and marine life. From an early age, she was drawn to the sea and fascinated by animals, especially marine species, which shaped her passion for veterinary medicine and conservation.

Kelen studied Veterinary Medicine at the Universidade Estadual do Ceará in Brazil, where she built a strong foundation in clinical practice. Towards the end of her degree, she began volunteering with a non-governmental organisation focused on marine life, an experience that helped her recognise her purpose as a veterinarian within the marine wildlife and conservation world.

After graduating, Kelen began her professional journey working with the Associação de Pesquisa e Preservação de Ecossistemas Aquáticos (AQUASIS) in Brazil, where she focused on marine mammal conservation, with particular emphasis on the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of Antillean manatees. This experience increased her interest in other marine species and motivated her to continue developing her skills in wildlife and marine conservation medicine.

Her growing passion for marine life and commitment to its conservation led Kelen to Olive Ridley Project. Now based at the Sea Turtle Health Institute in Lhaviyani Atoll, Kelen works as ORP’s Associate Veterinary Surgeon, contributing to the clinical care, conservation medicine and recovery of sea turtles, while also supporting ongoing conservation and outreach efforts at the centre.

When she’s not working, Kelen enjoys exploring new cultures, traveling, and embracing opportunities that connect her love of adventure with her dedication to wildlife.
