Zayaan Ibrahim, Assistant Sea Turtle Ranger, Laamu Atoll

Zayaan was born and raised in Laamu Atoll, Maldives, where the ocean shaped much of his childhood. Growing up, he spent most of his free time by the beach or exploring the sea, developing a deep connection with the marine environment.

After completing school and his O’Level exams in 2024, Zayaan earned his PADI Open Water certification. His frequent snorkelling and diving adventures led to a growing fascination with sea turtles, especially since he encountered them regularly during his underwater explorations.

As he learned more about these remarkable creatures, Zayaan discovered that sea turtles are endangered and face numerous threats around the world. Motivated by this knowledge, he began volunteering with conservation projects led by NGOs, local councils, and educational institutions.

In August 2025, Zayaan joined the Olive Ridley Project (ORP) as an Assistant Sea Turtle Ranger. Based on L. Gaadhoo, Maldives’ most significant nesting site, he monitors sea turtle nesting activity, collects crucial data, protects nests and helps conduct educational and outreach sessions with and for local communities.

Alongside his conservation work, Zayaan continues to refine his diving and underwater photography skills. He believes that striking imagery has the power to inspire action and ignite a sense of responsibility towards protection of the natural world.
