Meet Teddy, A Small Juvenile Olive Ridley Ghost Gear Victim

Teddy is a a small juvenile weighing only 4 kg. He was rescued from a ghost net in Baa Atoll by Seaside Finolhu.

Intake Date: 8th January 2020
Length: 35 cm
Weight: 4.05 kg
Status: Released 28th February 2020

Teddy has been adopted by Paulina & Pawel, and by Matthew & Cara.

Teddy had partially self amputated in the ghost net. Vet Jackie performed surgery the day after he arrived to remove the exposed humerus bone and diseased tissue around the bone. The surgery went well and he is currently recovering in his tank.

13 January 2020
Teddy is on a course of antibiotics and is currently buoyant but eating well. He should hopefully be diving soon.

20 January 2020
Teddy still cannot dive but is eating well. Unfortunately, his surgery site started to break down due to the lack of healthy skin. He will need a follow up procedure in the future. But he is bright and happy and continues on his antibiotics.

28 January 2020
Teddy is managing to do little dives now. It won’t be long before he will be sleeping at the bottom of the tank. His surgery site still looks good so we are hoping it stays that way. The unhealthy skin is being treated topically and he still remains on antibiotics.

3 February 2020
Teddy still practices his diving. He stitches are holding and everything looks good at this point. His appetite is great and he has adapted well to life with three flippers.

10 February 2020
Teddy will have his stitches out this week and things are looking pretty good. Hopefully he will be ready for release soon. He is a really nice little turtle, super curious and always hungry!

17 February 2020
Teddy had his stitches out and most of the surgery site healed well. There is, however, a gap that opened up so he is having wound treatments twice a week, but he should be healed soon. We are hoping to get him home soon.

25 February 2020
Teddy had his pre-release check up and is ready to go home. We are hoping to release him on Friday.

28 February 2020
Teddy was released today. He left us with great gusto and dived straight down into the big blue.
