Meet Pearl, a Juvenile Double Amputee

Pearl is a young Olive Ridley turtle who was found entangled in a ghost net by our friends at Helengeli Resort in North Male Atoll in January 2018. She arrived at the Rescue Centre by seaplane via Marine Savers.

Intake Date: January 24th 2018
Length:
Weight: 12.8 kg
Status: Released August 30th 2018

Pearl was missing a back flipper from being entangled and needed a front flipper amputation the day she arrived. We also surgically repaired her remaining front flipper. She had deep wounds to her face and was missing a lot of skin and scales, exposing her skull.

Despite her injuries, she made great improvements and was bright and eating well. Pearl’s face, head, and stump wounds completely healed and she started behaving like a normal turtle, sleeping at the bottom.

Pearl had been ready to go for a while; she swam really well in our tanks. She was released back into the ocean on August 30th 2018. Pearl swam off into the deep nicely, but we will miss that cheeky turtle!
