Meet Nemo, A Baby Olive Ridley Ghost Net Victim

Nemo was rescued from a ghost net along with Dory. They were sent to us by Marine Savers.

Intake Date: 4th March 2019
Length: 28.5 cm
Weight: 3 kg
Status: Released 24th June 2019

Nemo has been adopted by Hans-Peter & Marlen Thalmann, Angelika Steinke & Valerie Tournier, for Ruby by Sheena Petts and for Lydia by Hannah Shepherd

Both of Nemo’s front flippers were badly damaged by the ghost net. We had to amputate the front right flipper as it was deeply cut and infected. The left flipper was also infected with two open joints, but luckily there were no broken bones. We have desperately been trying to save this flipper. Nemo also had a shell infection, which we treated him for.

The infection caused extensive damage to his bones and joints. It took 3 surgeries and a long course of antibiotics, but Nemo finally started using his left flipper again! He became stronger each day and used his damaged front flipper more and more. We were really pleased to see this as we were not sure at one point if he would ever regain function.

Nemo was finally ready to be released on June 24th 2019. He had put on 1.85kg whilst at the Rescue Centre.
