Meet Daniella, A Ghost Gear Victim

Daniella is a juvenile olive ridley turtle and a victim of ghost net entanglement. She was found by staff at Baros Maldives Resort on 16th December 2018.

Intake Date: 16th December 2018
Length: 57 cm
Weight: 18.6 kg
Status: Transferred to Atoll Marine Centre for further rehabilitation 27th February 2019

Daniella has been adopted by Cathleen & Michael Laskus.

Daniella is very buoyant and has a front stump left from having self amputated in the struggle to get free from ghost net entanglement.

She finally started eating after 3 weeks at the Rescue Centre. Turns out she has a huge appetite! With her strength improved, we performed surgery to remove the stump left by the ghost net. She recovered well from the surgery and the wound healed nicely, but she continued to be buoyant.

Daniella dived on a couple of ocean swims, but she was still not diving in our tanks. She was sharing a tank with Penny, separated by a partition. Daniella and Penny managed to break down this partition and were found hanging out together on the same side! They had obviously become used to each other whilst being kept separate by mesh.

Both Penny and we will miss her, but we know that she will be well cared of at the Atoll Marine Centre.
